Family: SmilacaceaeJapanese: サルトリイバラ (猿捕茨) [Sarutori Ibara]
Is there an English common name for this species? If not, I nominate Hellvine. Or maybe deciduous barbed wire. This is the thorny vine that loves to snare you in the forest and rip your clothes and refuses to let go until it's drawn blood. I'm okay with the other smilax species here. It's just this one that is found mostly in overgrown areas at middle elevations that bothers me.
