Ainsliaea linearis Makino
Family: AsteraceaeJapanese: ホソバハグマ [Hosoba Haguma]
These riparian rheophytes are endemic to Yakushima, and suited well to cling to riverside rocks. The narrowness of their leaves helps them survive when submerged in raging currents, as compared to compared to A. apiculata found nearby. Mitsui and Seteguchi provide a very accessible study of gene flow between the two species.
