Family: RubiaceaeJapanese: アリドオシ (蟻通し) [Aridōshi]
The thorns deter the deer . . . sometimes. This small shrub with pairs (or sometimes quadruplets) of small white flowers followed by red berries is especially abundant in mid-elevation, replanted forests of cryptomeria.
