Pieris japonica (Thunb.) D.Don subsp. japonica var. yakushimensis
Family: EricaceaeEnglish: Japanese andromeda
Japanese: ヤクシマアセビ [Yakushima Asebi]
I've found shrubs with buds or blooms at different locations throughout the year, although the main bloom is at higher elevations in late spring. It lends a wedding-like atmosphere to higher elevations in April and May. According to Yonemura, the Yakushima variety is noted for flower sprays that stand erect instead of drooping down, although this characteristic is more prominent in some areas than in others. This is one of the few plants that deer avoid eating.
